Luxury Cars – Look But Don’t Touch!

August 3rd, 2007 by Brad C

When it comes to a slow speed bumper-to-bumper accident, luxury cars just don’t stack up, according to a recent study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.  Impacts at speeds as low as 3 or 6 miles per hour were enough to cause literally thousands of dollars in damage.

The IIHS put cars like the BMW 3 series and Mercedes C class through 6 mph full-width impacts and 3 mph corner impacts on both their front and rear bumpers, with disastrous results.  In many cases, the aerodynamic styling caused them to slide under the other vehicle, while the bars underneath the bumpers were too short to protect the corners or too flimsy to absorb the energy of the impact.  Repair parts were also pricey, adding to the high repair estimates.

I found the report a bit misleading, because they reported the total damage on each car for all four crashes, which put all the cars in the $5,000+ repair range.  So while it may look like the Audi A4 was one of the best overall because it did well in the full impact crashes, it was one of the worst performers in the corner crashes.  It was a similar problem for the Mercedes C class; it is listed as one of the worst performers because it did so badly on full impact collisions, although it did fairly well on the corner tests.

Nevertheless, the Infiniti G35 and Acura TL were still the worst of the worst, with expensive damage in all four incidents.  The Acura TSX and Lexus ES were overall poor performers too.

One of the biggest factors that affect your auto insurance rates is the car you drive - the insurance company looks at how will it hold up during a crash, and how much will it cost to repair.  If you buy a car that doesn’t do well in accidents, even small ones, and it is expensive to repair, your insurance quotes will suffer.  So just remember, if you buy a luxury car, better budget for luxury car insurance rates too!
