More People Willing to Buy Auto Insurance Online Without an Agent

August 12th, 2007 by Brad C

A recent study reports that forty percent of US adults are willing to buy car insurance while never speaking to an insurance agent, up from 29%.  Most likely to do so are adults from 35-49, of whom 45% would purchase via internet, phone, or mail.

The Gen X and Y groups are most comfortable with getting their information through other media sources, such as online.  They are especially willing to close the deal if there’s a second way to contact the company, such as an 800# on the official website.

The information came from Vertis Communications as part of their 2007 Customer Focus Insurance study, surveying 2000 consumers via telephone.  This is the 10th year the study has been conducted, and shows a definite trend towards buying insurance directly rather than through an insurance agent or broker.

I didn’t need a study to tell me that more and more people are buying automobile insurance, or any other type of insurance, through the Internet.  But if you’re buying car insurance online without an agent’s help, the responsibility becomes yours to shop smart.

That’s why it is important to learn what types and amounts of coverage are included in each quote, and compare the rates of several companies.  Yes, it may take you more than 15 minutes to do this, but better to take the time now than to pay too much for your policy, or worse, discover that you don’t have the coverage you need in case of an accident.  It’s also important to do the research yourself, even if a company is willing to “give” you the rates of their competitors.  We will talk more about that in another post.
