Texas Auto Insurance

As a resident of the Lone Star State, you know that you must have a Texas Auto Insurance policy to drive your automobile.  But just because you are required to purchase car insurance doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune on it.  That’s why we created – to provide you with the knowledge you need to shop for Texas car insurance, then to help you find the best insurance companies available to protect you and your family.  Thanks to the internet, this process is as simple as entering your zip code in the box below.  It’s fast, easy, and best of all, free.

Minimum Texas Auto Insurance Requirements

In 2008 Texas increased their minimum levels for auto insurance to 25/50/25 which means:
  • $25,000 in medical liability insurance for a single person
  • Up to $50,000 of medical liability for a single accident
  • $25,000 in property damage liability to repair damage you cause to other people’s property.

Though this may initially sound like a lot of coverage, keep in mind how quickly medical bills can add up.  $25,000 can be gone in just a few days, and once your insurance is used up, you will be personally responsible for any additional costs.  This puts your home, savings and retirement at risk.  That’s why most people choose a 100/300/50 policy to protect their assets.  If you can afford the extra premium, this is one of the best investments you can make to keep your family safe.

The Texas Personal Automobile Policy

Many Texas auto insurance companies offer a standard policy which includes the eight most common types of coverage

  1. Liability coverage – this coverage is required by law, and covers medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering compensation and property damage resulting from an accident.
  2. Medical payments coverage – pays for medical or funeral bills for individuals injured in an accident.
  3. Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage – also pays for medical bills, as well as up to 80% of lost income or the cost of hiring a caregiver while the injured person recovers.  This coverage is not required, but if you don’t want it, you must reject it in writing.
  4. Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage – if you are in an accident with a motorist who either has no insurance or too little insurance to cover your bills, this will make up the difference, up to the limit of your policy.  This will also provide coverage in case of an incident with a hit-and-run driver, provided the incident is reported to the police.
  5. Collision coverage – pays for the repairs to your vehicle following an accident.  This coverage is not required by the state, but if your car is leased or you have a car loan, that company will require this type of coverage to protect their investment in your auto.
  6. Comprehensive coverage – will repair or replace your car if damage occurs outside of an accident, from things like theft, hail damage, fire, vandalism, etc.  Again, this coverage will be required by lenders if the car has a loan or is leased, even though it is not required by the state.
  7. Towing and Labor coverage – if your car breaks down, this coverage will pay the cost of labor at the point of the breakdown, such as changing a tire, or the cost of towing the vehicle to a repair shop.
  8. Rental Reimbursement coverage – provides a daily amount to cover the cost of a rental car while your car is being repaired or replaced.

Important Things to Know About Texas Car Insurance

Some of the special things you need to be aware of as a Texas auto insurance policy holder include:

  • New or Additional Cars – if you replace a car or add a new one, it will be briefly covered automatically by your auto insurance policy, but you should notify your insurance company as soon as possible to ensure the vehicle is fully covered.
  • Rental Car Coverage – prior to renting a car, confirm whether or not your policy offers insurance coverage as you operate the vehicle.  This type of insurance is not automatic in Texas.
  • Mexico Insurance Coverage – while your policy will cover you in all 50 states and Canada, you will not be guaranteed coverage if you drive into Mexico.  Some policies do offer short term coverage for occasional trips just over the border, but if you travel to Mexico frequently or travel deep into the country, ask the insurance agent about adding an endorsement to the policy to make sure you’re protected.

How to Save on Texas Auto Insurance

Even though you must include car insurance in your budget, there are ways to keep those costs under control.  Here are some suggestions you can implement that will help you reduce your Texas car insurance rates:

  • Combine home and auto insurance policies with the same company.  You’ll receive a discount on both types of insurance by doing so.
  • Increase the deductible to the highest amount you can afford.  Just by increasing from the standard $250 deductible to a $500 level will make a noticeable difference in your rates.
  • Make sure you are receiving a discount for any safety or anti theft equipment on your vehicle, things like anti-lock brakes, side air bags, and electronic stability control,  These features make your car less likely to be involved or damaged in an accident as well as result in fewer injuries for occupants.
  • Compare quotes from several companies.  Make sure that the quotes are based on the same types of insurance with the same coverage limits and deductibles.  This is one of the most powerful ways to save money on Texas auto insurance.
